During Medication Safety Week, we remind you to be cautious about how you use and store your medications. Between 7,000 to 9,000 people die each year in the United States as a result of medication errors according to the National Institutes of Health. Caring for people who need help after a medication error costs more than $40 billion every year in this country.
At Harbor Health, we proactively attempt to prevent medication errors by offering you a “medicine check-up.” I’ll review all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements. I’ll also review your medical history, including any allergies, conditions, and previous surgeries. I’ll look for any potential drug interactions, drug-food interactions, duplications, side effects, and check that you are taking your medications at the right time, in the right dose, and for the right reason and duration.
I can also help you manage any chronic conditions you may have, such as hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol, by making sure you are taking the appropriate medications and providing advice on lifestyle changes such as smoking cessation, diet and exercise and weight loss options that can help improve your health and decrease your medication burden. We can work together to help you to manage any side effects you may be experiencing from your medications and make any adjustments to your treatment plan as needed.
Save money with a medicine check-up
A medicine checkup with your pharmacist can also help you save money on your medications. I will work with your provider to help you identify any cost-saving opportunities such as alternative medications that accomplish the same thing but cost less, generic drugs or unnecessary medications. I can also help you understand your insurance coverage and any potential out-of-pocket expenses. My goal is to decrease the number of medications you are taking and possibly replace those with lifestyle changes, which can increase your energy level and save you money.
We are currently seeing new patients at our Round Rock, Central Austin and Kyle locations and treat both adults and children.
